8 Tips to Prepare for a Hurricane with your Pets

Cody and Sierra, Part of the Family

With Hurricane Sandy, aka Frankenstorm, bearing down upon the entire Eastern seaboard and many states scrabbling to be ready when Sandy does hit, I am sure lots of people are going out to get food and supplies.  Something to remember during Hurricane Season and with Hurricane Sandy bearing down on us is to make preparations not just for yourself but your whole family, which includes your pets.

Pets are an integral part of people's and family's lives.  So make sure to follow these tips when preparing for Hurricanes with your pets.

  1. Food: Make sure to have enough food not just for yourself, but your pets as well.  We have dry dog food and canned dog food that will last Cody and Sierra about 2 weeks if necessary.
  2. Water: You also need to have clean drinking water for your pets too.  It is recommend to have 1 gallon of clean water per day.  If you are not sure if you have enough, at least have a teapot and heat source so that you can boil and sanitize drinking water if necessary.
  3. First Aid:  It's always good to have a First Aid Kit for people as well as pets.  You never know when you might need it.  I recommend having hydrogen peroxide (for disinfecting wounds), bandages and gauze, cloth tape, needles, gloves, ointment, and a blanket.  It is also a good idea to have a first aid booklet handy as well, as any medications that you or your pets need.
  4. Emergency Contacts: Keep an emergency contact for people who can help with your pets as well as veterinarians phone numbers in a safe place.   Also find the location of the nearest nearest pet-friendly shelter if you are your pet must go there.
  5. Towels and Rain Gear: We use microfiber towels that dry quickly for our dogs and they are very useful when we have no power, and can't wash clothes or towels.  If you need to go outside so your dogs can eliminate you are going to need rain gear.
  6. Cash: Cash is always good to have.
  7. Flashlights and Batteries:  It's good to have flashlights and batteries if you are going to be without power for a long time.   I would also recommend having short stubby candles since they are less likely to tip over and cause a fire.  Matches are a good idea to have too!
  8. Full Tank of Gas:  If gas stations don't have power, they can't sell gas.  It's a good idea to fill up your car's gas tank if you need to go somewhere with your pet.

I hope these 8 tips will help you prepare for Hurricane Sandy, Frankenstorm, or any other hurricane during hurricane season or other bad weather.  If you have a suggestion for this list or tips regarding hurricane preparedness with pets, please leave a comment below.

Suggest Holiday Songs for The Singing Dogs!

singing dogs

The Holiday Season is right around the corner and this means different things for different people.  For Crooning Cody, Singing Sierra and myself (aka The Singing Dogs) this means we are practicing hard on getting some holiday songs ready for the holiday season.

Instead of us dictating what our loyal fans and public want to hear and see on your Youtube channel, I thought I would ask all of you.  I am sure lots of people have their own personal favorite holiday songs and tunes they want to hear sung by “The Singing Dogs.”  If this is the case, please don't hesitate to let us know by leaving a comment below.

Please note Sierra is what I refer to as a “Dog Diva” since she only sings when she feels the urge and wants to.  Sierra also doesn't always like it when we shoot her on camera, since we can't figure out her good side.  Cody will sing by himself once in awhile, but not nearly as loudly when he has dog duets with Sierra.

Therefore it will be difficult for me to fulfill all song requests and we just can't do every holiday song.  We are happy to accept requests for obscure songs, but please note if you can't provide a for us to hear the song or sheet music it will be difficult for us to cover the song.  Cody, Sierra, and I would have to find the time to transcribe the song and then shoot a video for it, which is a time consuming process.

Cody and Sierra in Sherwood Gardens

sherwood gardens

This is a cute picture of Cody and Sierra at Baltimore's famous Sherwood Gardens I thought I would share.  As you can see Sierra likes to sit on the bench with me when walk over to Sherwood Gardens.  I guess it shows she is the boss since she is above Cody.  She definitely thinks she is a princess and should be treated as such.   It's nice for the dogs to sit and watch people since they are herding dogs that are supposed to keep watch over things.   I think the dogs need mental stimulation just as much as physical exercise.

Sierra actually escaped twice because she couldn't resist chasing a rabbit and squirrel.  When she was chasing the rabbit, with me and Cody trying to catch her, she was skipping just like the rabbit.  It was pretty funny to watch but nerve-wracking too I wasn't sure if she would go into the street.  Sometimes she is a really bad girl, but she doesn't care!  Cody tends to be more agreeable, at least most of the time.

Cody and Sierra Lying Together

Cody and Sierra

I thought this was a cute picture of Cody and Sierra lying together, so I thought I would share.  Sometimes they sit next to each other closely but don't touch like this.  I thought it was nice the dog siblings could be so close.  I haven't really seen Cody and Sierra do this except when Sierra was a puppy and liked to cuddle in Cody's belly.  Nice to see they still like old habits.

Bestfriends Furever Doggie Daycare Open House – October 13th

Bestfreinds Furever, a Doggie Daycare and Boarding Facility, is holding an open house tomorrow (Saturday) October 13th from from 12am – 6pm.  Staff will be on hand to show people the Cockeysville facility if they are interested in utilizing their pet services.  There will also be snacks, door prizes,  a costume contest, and a face painter.  (Not sure if the face painter is for humans or dogs, but I hope people aren't planning to face paint dogs!)

Sounds like the open house will be quite an experience and fun.  If you can make tomorrow to checkout the facility, I would try to swing by.  We currently use another facility to board Cody and Sierra but are considering using Bestfriends Furever in the future since taking with someone who works there.
